The Great Gibson - Admirals Edge Penguins 2-1

The Norfolk Admirals capitalized on some Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins mistakes in the first period and leaned on their goaltender, John Gibson, in the final two periods to secure the 2-1 win. The win for the Admirals was their 12th straight over the Penguins at Mohegan Sun Arena.

A good goaltending duel tonight between Eric Hartzell and the aforementioned Gibson, but it was the Admirals goaltender stealing the spotlight with 25 saves on 26 shots. Both goaltenders are playing at the top of their game right now, in what has been good rookie campaigns by both netminders so far this season.

Hartzell is now 5-2 in January with a 1.33 GAA, .944 SV% and one shutout. Gibson has been just as impressive for Norfolk and improves to 4-0-1 with the win, boasting a 1.16 GAA, .952 SV% and one shutout.

The Admirals win over the Penguins, paired with a Binghamton Senators loss tonight, tightens the East Division standings even more as the top three teams in the division are separated by five points. The Penguins get back at it tomorrow night at home against the Rochester Americans, while Norfolk continues their road trip tomorrow in Syracuse.

Hartzell Making the Most from his AHL Opportunities

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Hartzell is having a fine rookie season thus far.
EDITOR'S NOTE (2/3/14): Eric Hartzell has been named the American Hockey League's Goaltender of the Month for January, appearing 10 games last month and posting a record of 5-2-0, with a 1.33 goals against average and a .944 save percentage and one shutout. Below is the original story from January 31st, detailing Hartzell's journey this far in his first full season of professional hockey.

An injury caused Hartzell to miss the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS) 2013-14 season opener and first three weeks of the regular season back in October.

Upon returning to the ice, Hartzell was re-assigned by Pittsburgh from the AHL Penguins to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) at the end of October and made his first professional start in a regular season game November 1st in a home game with the Reading Royals. His first game didn't not go the way he would have wanted, as he allowed five goals on 30 shots in a 6-2 loss to the Royals.

In five games with the Nailers, Hartzell played well with a 2.58 goals against average and .922 save percentage, despite going 2-2-1. His best ECHL performance came in his 4th start on November 14th against Elmira, where he posted his first pro shutout, a 37-save effort, in a 1-0 Nailers win. Winning tight, low-scoring games continued to be the trend at the AHL level upon being called back up to the WBS Penguins on November 18th, following an almost three week conditioning stint for the rookie goaltender.

Hartzell's long awaited AHL debut on November 23rd was well worth the wait. The 6-4, 205 pound goaltender out of Quinnipiac was peppered with shots by the St. John's IceCaps, and with the Penguins trailing 1-0 heading into the 3rd period, Hartzell was a big reason why the game was only a one goal game. He stopped 25 of 26 through 40 minutes, with the Penguins being out shot badly at 26-9 and seemingly over matched.

Hartzell was rewarded for his strong play in his debut, as the Penguins went on to strike for five goals in the third period in route to a 5-2 win, Hartzell's first at the AHL level.

His second start, six days later against the (at the time) red-hot Binghamton Senators, Hartzell pulled off another clutch goaltending performance, getting his first AHL shutout in a 1-0 win for the Penguins in a 25-save effort.

With a great start to his AHL career, there's always going to be some mistakes to learn from as part of that maturing process.

Hartzell ran into some of that trouble in St. John's, being tagged for five goals on 29 shots in a 5-0 loss to the IceCaps, a team which Hartzell played well against back in Wilkes-Barre just two weeks prior.

Despite that, he continued to play well allowing no more than three goals in any of his next four starts. Hartzell was pulled from action in a game at the end of December, the first time in his pro career, after allowing two goals on three shots in the first period of a game against Syracuse in a game where the Penguins didn't come out ready to play.

Head coach John Hynes opted to switch things up and turned to the team's normal starter Jeff Deslauriers, who came in and stopped all 21 shots he faced in a turn-it-around kind of 5-2 win over the Crunch.

So just as it seemed that Hartzell was starting to possibly push more for the team's starting bid, heading into January and the new calendar year Jeff Deslauriers was still the clear number one goaltender.

Deslauriers started six of the first seven games in January, but in his sixth start on January 18th in Rhode Island against the Providence Bruins, the first game of the team's six-game road trip, the trouble for Deslauriers began. He was pulled from action after allowing his 4th goal on 26 shots about midway through the third period.

Hartzell finished the game and got the start the next night in Maine against the Portland Pirates. Hartzell responded with a 4-2 over the Pirates and a win the next night in a rematch with the Bruins in a 5-1 decision in favor of the Penguins.

With a week off before the next three-in-three, the Penguins coaching staff had plenty of time to think about who start on last Friday night in Norfolk against the recently surging Admirals.

Still, the Penguins rolled with their number one goaltender in Deslauriers in hopes he would bust out of his recent funk. After allowing two goals on seven shots in the first period and a confrontation in the crease with Admirals forward Zack Stortini after a lack smack at the Pens goaltender after a whistle, things seemingly boiled over for Deslauriers.

With just over six minutes played into the 2nd period, and a timeout on the ice for a media break, the teams convened at their benches like they normally do. Deslauriers and Admirals goaltender John Gibson seemed to have exchanged words at center ice during the timeout. As the goalies headed for their nets, which in the second period means their paths cross, contact was made and the two goalies squared off in a quick wrestling match that started a frenzy on the ice.

Deslauriers was assessed a double minor for roughing, a fighting major and a game misconduct which resulted in an ejection. He hasn't played since.

Once again, Hartzell was thrown into the middle of the action. He finished the game and got the start against Norfolk the next night out, winning with a spectacular performance stopping 33 of 34 and all eight attempts against him in the shootout. Hartzell even got the start Sunday in Hershey after playing the night before and following a six hour overnight bus ride for a 5:00 p.m. EST just 12 hours later.

Last night, it was Hartzell leading the Penguins out for warmups to start this week's worth of games. With games Friday and Saturday, and several three-in-threes coming heading down the stretch, both goaltenders will play. But if the last week or so has been any indication, Hartzell is making a strong push to be the team's number one goalie.

Hartzell Leads Penguins Past Crunch

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins score early and often in a 4-0 victory over the Syracuse Crunch tonight. The Penguins win helps them keep pace in the East Division race as first place Binghamton defeated Worcester 6-3 tonight, maintaining their three point lead over the Pens. The loss for the Crunch was their 5th straight, and they'll look to bounce back Friday night in Utica against the Comets.

Eric Hartzell got the 20-save shutout, his 3rd of the season, improving to 9-3-1 in his rookie campaign. Hartzell has been impressive in January, going 5-1-0 with a 1.24 goals against average and a .949 save percentage. With another game left for the Penguins this month, another strong performance from Hartzell might be enough to land him AHL Player of the Month honors. More on Hartzell and the AHL Penguins goaltending situation online in a story tomorrow.

Team captain Tom Kostopoulos added a goal and an assist in the win for the Penguins, who opened up a five game home stand that continues this weekend with games Friday against Norfolk and Saturday against Rochester.

AHL Game Preview: Penguins Return Home to Face Syracuse

Another American Hockey League (AHL) East Division battle tonight in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS) host the Syracuse Crunch (SYR) at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.

The Penguins return home after a six game road trip in which they went 3-3-0-0 in a pair of three-in-threes. They find themselves in the thick of things in the race for the division, but four points separates the Pens from dropping to 4th place in the division and on the outside looking in on the playoffs.

The Crunch come into the game on a four game losing streak, needing to turn things around to get back into the division race, currently trailing leader Binghamton by 17 points. The Crunch are in last place in the division, trailing 4th place Hershey by 10 points. They are also 10 points out of a playoff spot coming into Wednesday night's action.

Powerplay Woes Continue For Penguins in 2-0 Loss to Hershey

Sunday, January 26, 2014
The Penguins are shut out by the Bears at Giant Center this afternoon.

At the tail end of three games in three nights for both teams, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell behind early and couldn't capitalize on any of their seven power play chances in a 2-0 loss to their biggest rival, the Hershey Bears.

The Penguins power play was held scoreless this weekend, and is 0 for their last 21 attempts following a first period power play goal in Maine against the Portland Pirates on January 18th.

Philip Grubauer pitched in a 27-save shutout for the Bears, who have now won five straight games and tighten up the standings in the East Division with a shutout win over a divisional opponent.

The Penguins return home for a Wednesday night match up with the Syracuse Crunch at the Mohegan Sun Arena at 7:05 p.m. EST. Recap after the jump.

AHL Game Preview: Penguins Finish Road Trip in Hershey

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hershey Bears meet for the 8th time this season at 5:00 p.m. EST at the Giant Center. The Penguins own the season series 5-0-1-1, but the Bears won the last meeting in a shootout and enter today's game winners of four straight and six of their last seven.

Hartzell Stands On His Head - Penguins Prevail In Shootout

Saturday, January 25, 2014
Hartzell is taking over the team's #1 goaltender spot on the depth chart with his recent play.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins jumped on Eric Hartzell's back in the third period and rode the rookie goaltender all the way to the 8th round of the shootout. He stopped all 14 third period shots, the four shots in overtime and all eight Admirals shooters in the shootout en route to a 2-1 win.

After seven rounds with no goals, Kuhnhackl skated down the ice and beat ex-WBS goaltender Brad Thiessen to the blocker side, while Hartzell had one more save left in him tonight on Devante Smith-Pelly.The win, coupled with a Binghamton loss, brings the Pens within one point of the East Division leader.

Scary moment in the final minute of regulation, as Zach Sill up-ended Nolan Yonkman and Yonkman accidentally caught Sill's forearm with his skate. The incident happened in the corner where the door to the WBS locker room and Sill ran off the ice into the room as back up goaltender Jeff Deslauriers stood up in the opening and started screaming for WBS trainer Kyle Moore. Those in attendance in Norfolk also reported that an EMT rushed to the WBS locker room to help Moore tend to Sill. Let's hope Sill is okay.

Akeson Stuns Albany in Phantoms 2-1 Win

A thrilling finish to today's AHL game at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.

With time running out and the game tied 1-1 between the Albany Devils and Adirondack Phantoms, Jason Akeson found a puck in the slot and snapped one past Devils goaltender Scott Wedgewood with 20.5 seconds left in regulation, snapping the Phantoms three-game losing streak in a 2-1 win this afternoon.

More on Akeson. The goal was Akeson's team-leading 14th of the season and his 5th game winner (all in the last 11 games). He now has 35 points (14G-21A) in 40 AHL games this season, good for 14th in the league in scoring. Akeson also has seven goals in his last nine games.

This afternoon's goal came at crucial moment in a big game for the Phantoms, looking to right the ship and make a push toward the playoffs heading down the stretch. If the Phantoms are looking for continued success, as they return home to host the Hartford Wolfpack on Sunday, Akeson will need to continue to play well like he has over the last month or so.

Friday Night Round Up

Norfolk - 4, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton - 1

Last night in Norfolk, the Penguins couldn't solve Admirals goaltender John Gibson for a third straight time this season despite having three back-to-back power play chances to start the final period trailing 2-1. Special teams proved to be the difference as Norfolk went 2-for-3 with the man advantage, while killing off all five Penguins power plays.

Things got interesting 6:09 into the 2nd period as Jeff Deslauriers was covering a loose puck atop his crease for a whistle and face-off. After the whistle had blown Admirals forward Zack Stortini took an extra whack at Deslauriers equipment, jarring the puck loose and sending the Penguins netminder in a bit of rage. Deslauriers came up swinging on Stortini, starting a scuffle in front of the WBS net.

After things seemingly cooled down during a TV timeout, Deslauriers and Admirals goaltender John Gibson exchanged words at center ice which led to contact being made and a center-ice slug fest. Only Deslauriers was assessed a major for fighting and ejected from the game. Gibson received four minutes, a double-minor for roughing and remained in the game. The rest of the penalties in the ensuing melee ended up giving the Admirals a three minute power play after two minutes of four-on-four play.

The win brings Norfolk to 6-1-0-2 in their last nine games, one point within the 2nd place Penguins, who the Admirals rematch tonight at 7:15 p.m. EST and four points behind East Division leading Binghamton.

Pittsburgh Native Gibson Haunts Penguins For Third Time in 4-1 Loss to Norfolk

Friday, January 24, 2014
Lots of rough stuff in tonight's Penguins/Admirals game, setting the tone for tomorrow night's rematch. Editor's note: Photo is from the October 26th game. Credit: Amy's WBS Pens Picture Page.

Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had three straight power plays in the first 6:18 of the period, but were unable to tie the game. Norfolk's Devante Smith-Pelly finished off a tic-tac-toe passing display for his second goal of the night on a power play shortly after that and Admirals goaltender John Gibson stopped 20 of 21 shots and haunts the Penguins for a third straight time this season in the Admirals 4-1 win.

A lot of extra curricular activity in this one, including a goalie fight between Jeff Deslauriers and the aforementioned Gibson. These two teams rematch in Norfolk tomorrow night as well in what should be an interesting East Division game.

What Should The Penguins Do With Simon Despres?

Monday, January 20, 2014
Photo credit: Amy's WBS Penguins Picture Page
It seems as though the Penguins organization has come to a crossroads with defenseman Simon Despres. The third year pro came into the season looking to earn a full-time NHL roster spot, but has seemingly fallen out of favor with the Pittsburgh brass. With the blue line in Pittsburgh returning to full-strength and the trade deadline quickly approaching (March 5th - 3:00 p.m.), what is Despres' future within the Penguins organization?

Penguins Finish Weekend Strong With 5-1 Win Over Bruins

Sunday, January 19, 2014
With wins in back-to-back starts this weekend, Hartzell improved to 7-2-1 on the season for the Penguins.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins bounced back after a 5-1 loss to Providence Bruins on Friday, finishing the weekend with back-to-back wins, including a 5-1 win over those same Bruins this afternoon in Rhode Island.

Eric Hartzell stopped 33 of 34 for back-to-back wins for him in the WBS net. Hartzell improves to 7-2-1 on the season, and after relieving Jeff Deslauriers on Friday night and starting both Saturday night and today, might the AHL Penguins have a new number one goaltender?

Simon Despres was re-assigned to the AHL Penguins before this weekend's games and has been impressive in his first three games back: three goals, one assist and a plus six rating. More on Despres tomorrow.

Samuelsson's Saturday Success - Pens Win 4-2

Saturday, January 18, 2014
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Portland Pirates tonight in what was a career night for Penguins defenseman Philip Samuelsson. Samuelsson figured in on all four Pens goals tonight, tallying one goal and three assists for his first four-point night of his pro career.

The Penguins go back to Providence tonight for a Sunday afternoon tilt with the AHL Bruins.

Bruins Exact Revenge On Penguins

Friday, January 17, 2014

The last time the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Providence Bruins played before tonight, the Penguins were wrapping up a history making come-from-behind playoff series win with a 5-0 shutout in Game Seven last May. Not sure if the Bruins really kept that last meeting close to heart, but they certainly looked good tonight in a 5-1 win over the Penguins.

#WBSPens Secondary Scoring Search

Sunday, January 12, 2014

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins trailed 3-2 after two periods to the Hartford Wolfpack last night and were held to only eight registered shots on goal. I'm sure the message in the locker room from the coaching staff during the second intermission had something to do with getting pucks to the net. Three goals and 17 shots later, the Penguins third period magic returned as they finished the weekend with back-to-back wins to move within one point of East Divison leading Binghamton.

Although the Penguins top line, which has been carrying the offensive load lately, was held off the scoresheet last night, the Penguins might have found some guys that are looking to provide that secondary scoring touch, namely 2nd year forward Dominik Uher and rookie forwards Anton Zlobin and Tom Kuhnhackl, who combined for four goals in last night's 5-3 win over Hartford.

Penguins Halt Phantoms Streak, Win 4-1

Friday, January 10, 2014

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms, snapping the Phantoms four-game win streak.

Team captain Tom Kosotpoulos led by example, opening the scoring and figuring in on two power play goals for the Pens in the second period, just 52 seconds apart. Jeff Deslauriers (15-9-2) stopped 31 of 32 shots, including all 13 Phantoms shots in the third period to preserve the win for the Pens.

Jason Akeson tied the game up at 1-1 in the 2nd, extending his point scoring streak to five games for the Phantoms. Brandon Manning had a game-high nine shots on net as the Phantoms out shot the Pens 13-4 in the final frame but were not able to overcome the two goal deficit.

The Penguins return home for a Saturday night match up with the Hartford Wolfpack, while the Phantoms travel to Binghamton to take on the Senators.

Crunch Double Up Penguins 4-2

Wednesday, January 8, 2014
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins got behind early and didnt have enough for the Syracuse Crunch tonight, falling 4-2 to their East Division foe. The Penguins travel to Glens Falls, New York for a Friday night match up with the Adirondack Phantoms.

The Crunch jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period on back-to-back power play goals.

Vladimir Namestnikov blasted a shot from the slot past Deslauriers with five seconds left on a five-on-three power play and 30 seconds later Jon DiSalvatore redirected a point shot in past Deslauriers to make it 2-0 Crunch.

It was more of the same in the second period, as the Crunch took a 3-0 lead 8:59 into the middle frame on a broken play. Reid McNeill lost his stick behind the net and in the shuffle, Brett Connolly wired a puck to the top shelf.

The Penguins took their timeout after that goal, but the Crunch made it 4-0 just 55 seconds later. Deslauriers stopped the initial shot, but the rebound was mishandled. Philip Samuelsson tried to corral the rebound to his goaltender, but inadvertently put the puck into his own net.

That was the end of the night for Deslauriers, who allowed four goals on 17 shots in 28:59. Tough to blame Deslauriers for any of the goals, but at that point (after the team already used it's timeout) a goalie change was the last move to try and shift the momentum away from the Crunch.

Samuelsson took a delay of game penalty late in the period, but was in the right place at the right time as he exited the box. He received a stretch pass from Denver Manderson and scored his first goal of the season to get the Pens on the board with 2:21 left in the middle frame.

Samuelsson scored his second of the night for the Penguins to cut the Crunch lead to 4-2 with 4:49 left in regulation, but that would be as close as the Pens would get.

Up next for the Penguins is an Adirondack Phantoms team that has won four straight. The two teams face off at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday.

ROSTER NOTES

Jeff Deslauriers got the start in net, allowing four goals on 17 shots in 28:59 before being replaced by Eric Hartzell. Hartzell stopped all five shots he faced the rest of the way.

Bobby Farnham returned to the WBS lineup after missing the last four games with an undisclosed injury.

Reid McNeil returned to the WBS blue line, replacing Harrison Ruopp who was a healthy scratch.

Carter Rowney didn't take the warmup skate and was also a healthy scratch.

WBS Penguins Send Three to Wheeling

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have re-assigned defensemen Peter Merth and Nick D'Agostino along with forward Cody Sylvester to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL).

For Peter Merth, the re-assignment comes with a chance to get in some game action, as he has been recovering from an injury that has only allowed him to play in two games with the Pens this season. Merth had been practicing with the team, though he hasn't played in a game since December 6th.

The demotion of Nick D'Agostino comes as a bit of a surprise, but the rookie defenseman will go from a third pairing with limited ice time at the AHL level to probably a top pairing with more minutes and more power play time at the ECHL level, which will be good for his development in the long run. In 25 games with the Pens this season, D'Agostino tallied seven points (1G-6A), 11 PIM and a minus one rating.

Cody Sylvester came to the Pens in the midst of all the injuries and call ups and made quite the impression in his first game up in Rochester, scoring his first AHL goal in the Pens' 3-1 win over the Americans back on November 20th. In all, Sylvester registered two points (2G-0A) in 17 games with the Pens.

These roster moves leave the Pens with 13 healthy forwards, including Bobby Farnham who was reported to have practiced with the team yesterday for the first time in 2014, and seven healthy defensemen.

The Penguins host the Syracuse Crunch tonight at 7:05 p.m. EST.

WBS Pens End BSens Win Streak With 4-1 Victory

Sunday, January 5, 2014
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ended the weekend on a positive note, ending the Binghamton Senators seven game win streak and defeating the BSens 4-1. The win moves the Penguins within one point of the East Division leading BSens.

Eric Hartzell stopped 23 of 24 shots to improve to 5-2-1 on the season. Anton Zlobin, Nick Drazenovic, Zack Torquato and Barry Goers scored goals for the Penguins in the win. The Pens are back in action at home Wednesday night against the Syracuse Crunch in another East Division match up.

Recap after the jump.

AHL Game Preview: WBS Pens Host BSens at 4:05 p.m. EST

The Wilkes/Barre Scranton Penguins (WBS) finish up a three game weekend with a Sunday afternoon home game against East Division leading Binghamton (BSens) at 4:05 p.m. EST.

Binghamton comes in riding a seven game winning streak, including a pair of overtime victories this weekend. Like the Pens, the BSens are playing their third game in as many days. I was fortunate enough to catch up with Binghamton Senators beat writer Matt Weinstein from the Press & Sun Bulletin to help break down today's match up. Some of his thoughts are below:

On driving forces behind the BSens' recent win streak:
"Their power-play has scored in six of the seven games (including five last night). Their top line of Hoffman-Da Costa-Schneider (Stone before his call up) have been dominant. Mike Hoffman has 14 points (4G-10A) and Da Costa has 11 (5G-6A) during the streak. Da Costa has a point in each game too. Their top PP unit now is Peterson-DaCosta-Schneider with Hoffman and Wideman at the point."
On Nathan Lawson getting the start today and how he has looked during this win streak:
"Lawson has looked very good especially since he started four straight games coming off an injury because (backup goaltender) Andrew Hammond had the flu. Lawson stopped 133 of 143 shots in that four game stretch with a .930 SV%."
On the BSens red-hot power play and guys to watch up front:
"Their PP is hitting on all cylinders like I mentioned above. In terms of lines, after their top line, Prince-O'Brien-Petersson is very speedy and skilled. Puempel and Robinson have been developing some chemistry lately as well with a few others taking up the third spot."
Weinstein's thoughts on today's matchup:
"Richardson always makes it a point to say how important these divisional matchups are and how important it is to play well against their rivals because you could always see them in the playoffs. After Saturday's game Richardson mentioned the playoff series from last year still bothers him and he knows it bothers his players too, so I expect them to be ready to play. The Penguins always match up well though."

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period, but it was the Manchester Monarchs with the late push and the 4-2 victory over the Pens tonight. Tom Kuhnhackl and Nick Drazenovic scored for the Penguins in the loss, who are back in action tomorrow when they host East Division leading Binghamton at 4:05 p.m. EST.

Recap after the jump.

AHL Game Preview: WBS Pens Host Manchester at 7:00 p.m. EST

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS) return home for a Saturday night match up with the Manchester Monarchs (MCH) at 7:05 p.m. EST, in a battle of two of the Eastern Conference's top five teams. The Monarchs come into tonight's game at the Mohegan Sun Arena tied for first place in the conference, while the Pens come in tied for the fifth best record.

It's the second and final scheduled meeting between the two teams this season. The Penguins beat Manchester 4-3 in overtime back on Sunday, October 20th at the Verizon Wireless Arena in New Hampshire. Brendan Mikkelson scored the OT winner for his first goal of the season.

Last night in Binghamton, the Monarchs rallied late in the third period to tie the game at 4-4 before dropping the game 5-4 in overtime. Jean-Francois Berube stopped 26 of 31 shots he faced in the loss. The Penguins scored with 3:59 left in regulation to tie Hartford 1-1 on Harry Zolnierczyk's 11th of the season. Nick Drazenovic and Paul Thompson scored for the Pens in the shootout, as Thompson's goal in the sixth round completed the WBS comeback.

Not So Fast, WBS Pens Score Late and Win 2-1 in Shootout

Friday, January 3, 2014
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins battled back from a 1-0 third period deficit to the Hartford Wolfpack, tying the game in regulation and winning 2-1 after six rounds of a shootout. It was the Penguins first shootout victory of the season.

Jeff Deslauriers got the start in net for the Penguins and won the goaltenders duel with Hartford's Dov Grumet-Morris, stopping 24 shots and five of six shooters in the shootout.

Interesting shooters for the Penguins in the shootout, as Zack Torquato and Brian Dumoulin each got a chance for WBS. Neither scored. Nick Drazenovic scored to tie the shootout at 1-1 after Danny Kristo led off the third round with a shootout goal for the Wolfpack. Paul Thompson won it for the Pens with a goal in the sixth round.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS) are back in action tonight when they take on the Hartford Wolfpack (HFD) at the XL Center tonight at 7:00 p.m. EST. It's the first of two meetings on the regular season schedule as the two teams will rematch next Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre next Saturday night.

The Wolfpack are struggling so far this season in last place in the conference, but are coming off two wins in three games last week. They'll look to continue their winning ways with a pair of home games this weekend. The Wolfpack host Worcester Saturday in a rematch of last week's 3-2 overtime win by Hartford.

The Penguins are coming off a 5-2 win where the difference in offensive production came with some timely secondary scoring. Five different players (Thompson, Drazenovic, Kostopoulos, Zlobin and Sylvester) scored goals in the victory. They have a big weekend at home ahead of themselves when the top team in the conference, the Manchester Monarchs, comes to town for a Saturday night showdown.

The Pens also host East Division leading Binghamton on Sunday, so it will be key for the Penguins not to overlook tonight's opponent and focus on the first game of the three-game weekend and take it one game at a time.

Tune into Highland Park Hockey on Twitter tonight for all the latest in-game updates of tonight's AHL action. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. EST. Roster notes, lineups and more after the jump.

December Grades - WBS Penguins

Thursday, January 2, 2014

After three months of the American Hockey League (AHL) season, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS) find themselves one point out of first place in the East Division with a record of 18-9-1-3.

In December, the team was hit particularly hard with injuries and call ups, yet in 10 December games they still managed to go 5-4-0-1 and picked up 11 out of a possible 20 points. Playing at home certainly didn't hurt, as the Pens played seven out of 10 at home including a season-high six game home stand during the holidays.

The Pens are starting to get healthy at the NHL level, which has seen defensemen Philip Samuelsson and Brian Dumoulin as well as forward Harry Zolnierczyk returned to the AHL Pens. With all the guys up and down between the NHL and AHL level, it was very tough to decide who to nominate as Highland Park Hockey's player of the month for December.

December's player of the month is...

Nick Drazenovic – Grade A

AHL Stats: 20GP, 5G-11A, +4, 8 PIM
November Stats: 8GP, 3G-3A, +2, 2 PIM

Drazenovic returned from injury to face his former team, the Springfield Falcons, and has been one of the team's best offensive players at a time when offense was at a premium. Centering the top line, Drazenovic has been a nice addition to the power play in December. He has been the team's most dangerous offensive weapon this month.

Grades for the rest of the guys on the team after the jump.
